Introduction：

Working principle of water softener:

The working principle of a water softener is mainly based on ion exchange technology, whereby calcium and magnesium ions are removed from the water through the use of ion exchange resins, thus reducing the hardness of the water. 

Ion exchange resins: Water softeners contain within them one or more beds of ion exchange resins, which are highly adsorbent hardness minerals, usually polymer particles. Commonly used ion exchange resins are sodium-type cation exchange resins, which adsorb calcium and magnesium ions from the water and release an equal amount of sodium ions.

Hard water entering the plant: Hard water (rich in calcium and magnesium ions) enters the water softening plant through the water pipe.

Ion exchange process: When the water flows through the ion exchange resin bed, calcium and magnesium ions exchange ions with sodium ions on the resin. The resin adsorbs the calcium and magnesium ions and releases the sodium ions into the water. In this way, sodium ions are increased in the water, while calcium and magnesium ions are removed.

Softened water output: Through the ion exchange process, calcium and magnesium ions are removed from the hard water, while sodium ions are added to the softened water. Eventually, the softened water is output from the plant for use in applications requiring soft water.

REGENERATION PROCESS: Over time, the sodium ions in the ion exchange resin gradually decrease, while a large number of calcium and magnesium ions accumulate on the resin. When the softening capacity of the resin bed diminishes, a regeneration process is required. Regeneration is usually carried out by passing brine with a high salt concentration through the resin bed to wash away the adsorbed calcium and magnesium ions and restore the softening capacity of the resin. After the regeneration process, the water softening equipment will start working again.
