When we refer to pure water, what do we mean exactly?
1. What is pure water?
In some area, drinking water comes from two sources - the Grand River and groundwater wells. Approximately 20 to 25 percent of the region's drinking water is sourced from the Grand River, which undergoes a comprehensive treatment process at the Mannheim Water Treatment Plant. The remaining 75 to 80 percent is extracted from groundwater wells throughout Waterloo Region. Groundwater requires less treatment than surface water, but it is sometimes filtered to remove minerals like iron and magnesium found naturally in aquifers. Purified water goes through an additional filtration process to eliminate chemicals and contaminants that may still be present in tap water, such as bacteria, algae, fungi, parasites, metals, and chemical pollutants.
2. How is water purified?
Water purification not only safeguards your plumbing but also removes unwanted particles. There are various types of filtration systems available based on individual needs. The three common methods for obtaining pure water at home are:
- Carbon Filters: Activated carbon bonds with contaminants, effectively removing them from the water. Popular products like Brita Filters utilize this method.
- Reverse Osmosis: This filtration process involves passing water through a semi-permeable membrane, which filters out particles larger than a water molecule. Although effective, reverse osmosis filters produce more wastewater compared to the amount of clean water obtained.
- Water Softeners: These systems replace calcium and magnesium with sodium, protecting your pipes from damage.
3. What is pure water used for?
In Canada, tap water regulations are similar to those for bottled water, ensuring safety for consumption. However, pure water has other common uses, such as:
- Food Preparation: Using pure water for cooking, washing vegetables, salads, pasta, and rice removes a significant portion of chemicals present in tap water, ensuring a healthier meal.
- Infant Formula: Pure water is the safest choice for preparing formula for babies.
- Pets: Animals have heightened senses, including taste and smell. Providing them with pure water eliminates the presence of added chemicals, offering a healthier option.
- Fish Tanks: Removing chlorine and other chemicals creates a clean and fresh environment for pet fish.
- Plants: Chlorine can harm plants and cause them to wither. Watering plants with purified water promotes their growth and vitality.
